Home - BingBING

This is Bing. He is an 9 month old border collie (November 2007). Unfortunately he was born deaf and is 90% blind. He only has one eye.

If you are very close to him, he can see you but his vision is not good enough for him to learn sign language. He can see bright colours, white and contrasting colours for example an orange ball on grass or a black toy on a white kitchen floor.
His back legs are quite unsteady and look too big for him. He loves to run around the garden but after a while always ends up in a heap as his back legs can't keep up with his front legs and brain.

Despite all his problems he is always happy, always wanting to do things and loves every body.
He is a very special little boy who needs a lot of cuddles and time.
I have had him since he was 5 months old. My boyfriend and I adopted him from
Many Tears Animal Rescue Cwmlogin House,
Cefniethin, Llanelli, Camarthenshire. SA14 7HB
www.manytears.co.uk

(If you could please email me and tell me where you read about Bing for example K9 magazine, Dogs Today magazine etc. I would be very grateful bingaug2007@aol.com )

We drove to Llanelli (after having a house check) to see if Bing would get on with our other dog Darry a 2 and 1/2 year old male yellow Labrador. We both fell in love with Bing as soon as we saw him and Darry didn't pay any attention to him which was good enough for us. Bing was laying outside asleep in the sun. We all walked over to the little white fluffy puppy but we couldn't wake him and realised he is 100% deaf. To wake him we have to either shake him quite hard, if it is light make a shadow over him or if its dark turn a light on.
Bing was fostered by a wonderful lady called Monica since he was 6 weeks old. She also was fostering quite a few other dogs and 20-30 cats as well as Bing.
He was great in the car on the way home and every time we went under a bridge he would snap at the shadows.
Bing and Darry are now the best of friends and love playing together.

How did Darry react to Bing's initial presence in the home?
When we got home Darry sniffed Bing all over for hours and kept looking at me as if to say what is going on? The next day when Darry realized Bing was still here again he looked at me to say "when is he going home?" 2-3 days later Darry was looking for Bing as soon as he woke up. 4-5 days they were and are still inseparable.

Please email Bing bingaug2007@aol.com
Home - Bing
We have had a few little accidents in the house during the first 3-4 days, but Darry taught him to go outside and he has done so ever since and is now 100% house trained in any house.

He loves bones, toys and anything he can chew. He gets bored very easily and can be destructive if he has nothing to do or left on his own for 5 seconds!!

Home - Bing

We have taken Bing and Darry to a few dog shows and Bing has come 4th for best rescue, 4th for cutest pup, 3rd for fancy dress, 2nd for best trick and 1st for special dogs with disabilities.
He loves all attention, all dogs and they are great places for him to socialise.

He has been to puppy training classes for 8 weeks which again is great for socialisation.

How did Bing react to Darry?
The first time he saw Darry we could all tell he loved him. He would follow him everywhere with an expression on his face that said "what are we going to do now, what else are you going to show me?"

To see a video of Bing at Many tears before we adopted him please go to http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=gRsuk-VDO4A

He haHome - Bings learned how to sit, give paws and lay down. He can play fetch with a ball if the ball is not too far away from him and he brings it back and gives it to you. He is not aggressive in any way. I can stroke him whilst he is eating, even take food out of his mouth and take his food bowl away from him. Can be stroked all over.
Although he loves other dogs some dogs don't like him because they can sense there is something wrong and one day whilst out on a walk, a dog came out from no where and attacked him, the owner did nothing and just ran off. My screaming scared the dog and it ran after its owner. He had a few cuts on his face and eyes and was very upset but luckily this has not put him off other dogs. I took him straight to the vets because the problem with dog bites is you don't know how deep they are and also the animal that was bitten could go into shock. Bing was checked over and he was fine.

Since Home - Bingwe have had bing he has been to the vets quite a few times. Four times in the past 4 months his eye which is normally blue turns brown. The cause Home - Bingdoesn't have to be a knock to the head it can just happen when blood goes to the back of his eye and clots making his eye look brown. When this happens he loses his sight completely and loses his bright bubbly personality. The vets gave him eye drops called Maxitrol, and so far his sight has come back the next day. We took him to Davies Vet specialist www.vetspecialists.co.uk and were told there is nothing that can be done to help him and if these clots keep forming then one day he will loose his sight forever but at the moment apart from the obvious he is fine.

Do you think it is important that Bing went to a home with another dog?
Yes, Bing needs another dog to show him dog things and to play dog games. He still wants cuddles but as there are two of us, they can have cuddles when ever they want. Bing was taken away from his mother and siblings at 6 weeks old and so missed out on lots of things which Darry is now teaching him. He needs another dog to hear and see for him when humans try to communicate but dogs can communicate with each other without sound. So I tell Darry and Darry tells Bing.

To date we have spent around £2,720.00 on him.

I need your help, please email me if:
  • Anyone in the Northamptonshire area could help Bing with a physical and mental activity (Agility, sheep herding) There is no reason why he should sit at home, he loves life just as much as every other B Collie.
  • I would love for him to go swimming to help strengthen his back legs
  • Or if you just have some questions you want to ask.
I am NOT looking for any activity for free, I am willing to pay for anything that will help Bing and improve the quality of his life. If/when he does go completely blind he will be very very limited on what he can do, so I am doing all I can whilst he has some eye sight.

Home - BingOn October 31st Halloween night we took Darry and Bing out for a walk so they could show off their costumes but we didn't see anyone nor did anybody call round trick or treating. Never mind they had fun anyway and look great in the costumes my mum made for them.

We took Bing out on November 5th to a firework display. Obviously he couldn't hear them but he could see them. When ever the Moon is out he loves to look at it and sometimes jumps up to try and get it. He really loved the fireworks and was also trying to jump up and catch them. Darry stayed at home because he doesn't like fireworks. We left all the lights on in our house, the curtains shut and the TV on so he couldn't hear the fireworks.

Do you think that dogs that are disabled as Bing are a sign that
people should be more responsible when breeding?
Yes, I have been told by most vets puppy's that are not developed correctly usually don't survive. But if they do the mother will not feed them and they will die. Or the breeders will take the poorly puppy to the vets to be euthanized. Bing is a miracle and lucky to be alive. Some might say "is it fair" but Bing has a life, a very happy life. He is not suffering and is not in any pain. He doesn't know he cant hear or cant see as this is all he has ever known. "Should Bing have been PTS" If you know the puppy is not suffering and you can find it a home (not just put it in kennels and hope someone will have it) Then fine. But otherwise no, euthanasia would be best as nothing should ever suffer. "Did Bing's breeders do the right thing by Bing" In this case I think they did but they must not EVER breed from the same two dogs again!!!

Bing P2 - BingThere are many things I feel would help Bing and so I am having a BAZAAR Saturday 24th Nov. 2.30 - 5pm at Loder Hall Maidwell, Northampton. Christmas Lights, Bric a brac, tea and mince pies etc to raise money
so Bing can have the best life possible. All the money will go towards:
  • A dog trainer (now got)
  • A Vibrating collar with remote (now got)
  • Hydrotherapy lessons
  • Seeing a specialist about his hearing
  • An activity that will stimulate his brain
  • Occasional Grooming (when his coat turns from white to grey ha ha)
  • All vet bills
  • Neutering ?
  • Any toy that he can see
  • And not forgetting his favourite hide bones!!
Also I would love to take Bing out for a walk, let him off the lead and not worry that he could go to far or meet another dog that could seriously injure him. So I would love a small field/area that he could run around in and I will know there wont be any other dogs about. So if you have a small piece of land I could walk him? Bing would be so grateful

Home - BingHome - Bing Thank you to everyone who helped at the Bazaar on Saturday. Watching the YouTube footage of Bing, it's hard to tell that he can't
see or hear. Do you find that his natural instincts help him manage?
Yes, The first time we saw Bing I said to his foster mum "Are you sure he is deaf and blind?" I expected him to be very slow and deliberate and not running round like a mad thing. I also never expected him to pull on the lead, again I thought he would walk by my side as he wouldn't know where he was going. But he pulls like a train.
With Bing it is trial and error, he will run and if he runs into something, he picks himself up and thinks "ok now I know there is something there" We tried so hard but we cant always keep up with him. We obviously don't want him running into things but cant always stop him but he has never really hurt himself as he is very floppy.

I have found a dog trainer who is willing to teach Bing www.theostewart-doglistener.co.uk When I mentioned everything about Bing and the Bing Bazaar, Theo said she would train Bing half Price!!!
Theo She has been so kind and helpful and is always there on the phone or email if and when I need her.
Theo came over to see Bing on the 21st November 2007 at 6.30pm and didn't leave until 10.45pm. Theo was calm and treated Bing like a normal dog. Just because he is deaf and 90% blind doesn't mean he can jump up people and do what he wants. Instead Home - Bingof saying "um, how on earth are we going to teach Bing to do certain things" she just said "don't worry there's always a way, how about this or try this and we'll find the best way that will suit Bing"
I have always known Bing can be like a normal dog and Theo confirmed it!!
Theo gave me THE DOG LISTENER by Jan Fennell. which I am reading, it is very interesting and worth reading.

I have noticed when he has an injection or cuts himself he really bleeds and as I work in a emergency vets and see cuts and injections all the time I know what is "normal" I took him to my day time Vets where the receptionists and nurses are always so kind to him to have some blood tests to see if he has a blood clotting disorder.
They have been sent off to a lab and I will get the results on Monday 26th Nov. 2007. They are willing to neuter him but they will have blood ready and may need to keep him in for 24 hours but I don't think it is worth the risk. I do not want him to bleed to death for something he doesn't have to have done.
My vets rang me on 28th November 2007 to say the blood results have come back and are normal. But to be sure they want to cut his gum to see how long it bleeds for but they want to do that under GA. If its OK then he will have to come back and be put under again for the operation. They said they would like to keep him in over night and he may have to be transfered to the emergency over night vets for them to look after.
Again I'm thinking thats two lots of general anesthetic and a big operation????

Home - Bing Home - Bing Poor Bing has got 2 shaved legs now as he had to have 2 blood tests.

Bing can now walk up and down the stairs (Friday 16th November) but it really takes it out of him. he sticks his tongue out in concentration but is so proud of himself when he gets to the top/bottom.
I will let him walk up and down the stairs once every 3-4 days. My boyfriend sits at the top of the stairs and I stand at the bottom. We never make him if he doesn't want to. We mostly find he wants to go upstairs when he sees Darry go up. We let him so that it might improve the muscles in his back legs a little. Darry gets so happy when Bing gets to the top and seems proud of him too.
Home - Bing Home - Bing

Home - BingWhen I call them in from the garden if Bing sees Darry running in he will follow but if it is dark or he is not looking then obviously Bing is still in the garden and Darry will come in. If that is the case I say to Darry "Go and get Bing, wheres Bing" and Darry will go back outside, touch Bing and then they both come running in.
Darry helps me so much when it comes to Bing. I remember once a few weeks ago my Boyfriend and I had been shopping and he had bought a cooked chicken for himself and the dogs. Bing was outside but Darry was in the kitchen. As soon as my boyfriend got the chicken out and started cutting bits off it Darry ran off. We both looked at each other very confused as Darry will do anything for chicken and always sits as soon as he can smell it . We watched Darry run into the garden and it was almost as if he said "Bing there is chicken in the kitchen, quick come in" they both ran in as fast as they could and then both sat ready. We could not believe our eyes as we thought Darry would only be to glad Bing wasn't there as that would mean more chicken for him.

Home - Bing Home - Bing

Since Theo has come over Bing is allot calmer. Today (1st Dec) we were all in the living room watching Xfactor. My boyfriend was taking and we noticed that when he said Danny minogue Bing would tilt his head. We then realised he thought we were saying Darry not Danny. And every time we said Darry he would tilt his head. At the time he was calmer than he had ever been. And so, when he is stressed or playing and running around he is totally deaf and almost 100% blind, but when he is calm his eye site is much better and although he doesn't know where the sounds are coming from or what we are saying he can hear something.
Home - Bing Home - Bing
I was out and about and I saw this jumper and knew Bing would love it. Don't get me wrong I am not one of these dog owners who dresses their dog up all the time like a little toy. To be honest I don't really agree with that kind of thing. But to wear once or twice for a few minutes is fun and Bing has this look on his face like he is important and has a job to do.

What a difference, I cant believe how different Bing is now. There is no way we would have been able to sit with him like this before. He laid there for about 3-4mins which is a world record for Bing as he wasn't even eating a bone and it was Bing who jumped on my boyfriend.

Home - Bing

When we first had him, he would jump up and snap the air all the time and I mean all the time. We would let Bing and Darry into the garden and Bing would stand just on the grass and he would bark and fly catch and that would be it. We knew that collies did this sometimes but this was almost 80% of the time. We took him to another practice and spoke to a vet and nurse and was told he could have a problem with his brain and possibly have a brain tumour. I was devastated. I cried all the way home, rang all my friends and family and cried myself to sleep that night. Although I am not a vet or nurse I still thought this may be the case in a normal dog, but I felt his fly catching was something he did to entertain himself in his dark and silent world.

Does Bing's personality enable him to overcome his limitations?
Defiantly. He wants to learn and be as normal as Darry. If he could talk he would say " I can do it, watch me everyone, see I am a good boy, what's next to do, what can you teach me now" He has a very active brain and from the second he wakes up he runs, he has no idea where but just runs, wags his tail and says "right what have a missed."

Home - Bing

As the days and weeks went by he was snapping less and less and he was paying more attention to us and Darry. He seemed to be coming out of his own little world more and more. He was fly catching now about 50-60% of the time. When we took him to the eye specialist he was doing it in front of the vet and the vet also was unsure why he was doing this. He very kindly called in a neurologist who took Bing away for 15-20mins. And their verdict was he does not have anything wrong with his brain, this is just something he does when he is stressed or anxious. That was the best news I had ever received and so spent the evening ringing everyone and telling them the good news.

Today 5th Dec 07 I received an email from three wonderful caring people called Jane, Gill and Glynness saying they unfortunately couldn't make the Bing Bazaar but they have put some money together and bought Bing and Darry some toys. (They saw my Bazaar poster and emailed me through the web site)
We met Jane and Gill for the first time in the car park of Welland Valley feeds in Market Harborough 7th Dec 07 and were given 2 Carrier bags full of brand new toys.
When we got home and had a look in the bags, we couldn't believe how much they had given Bing and Darry.

Home - Bing Home - Bing

A massive thank you to Jane, Gill and Jane's mother Glynness for being so kind and thoughtful and for making Bing's Christmas. Opening the ball and seeing how exited and happy bing was because of the thoughtfulness of others, almost made me cry. They both love their treat balls which keeps them busy for ages :)
So thanks again and I hope you like your Bing badges!!

When ever people meet Bing they always say to me " You should see if the papers would be interested in writing about Bing / You should email the local news and see if they will do a story on him?" At first I thought yes I suppose I could email some people but never got round to it. But more and more people kept telling me to so I decided to start emailing.
As soon as anything is confirmed I will update the website. (So come on people get back to me you wont be disappointed I promise)

Today 10th Dec Bing only fly catches when he is stressed and cant have his own way. which some days is never. If he is being to much and running around the living room, knocking everything over we hold his collar until he calms down which is called calm freeze www.pips-dog-blog.blogspot.com
At first it took a few hours for him to calm down but eventually he sighed anHome - Bingd laid down and even after we had released his collar he just wanted to lay down and relax. The more stressed he gets the more his eye could bleed again so he needs to be calm to keep his eye sight. So far (touch wood) He hasn't had anymore bleeding since Theo came to us 19 days ago, which is a record for Bing and we are so glad. We now only have to hold is collar for around 10-15mins before he is relaxed. You can always tell when he is calm as any bits of him that are pink are pale and the more stressed he is the redder he gets. (not his gums his eyes and nose etc)

Just some advice. Have a look at your dog or cats gums when they are well and healthy, the pink part. If there are dark or black parts just find a pink bit and remember the colour. Then if you animal is ill look at their gums the paler they are the more they will need to see a vet. If they are white/blue get to your vets NOW!!!

Thursday 13th we woke up to find that Bing's eye was brown and again he is totally blind. He was just about OK going out into the garden for a wee during the day, but when it got dark he didn't want to go not even with Darry next to him. We had to put him on a lead and go out with him which is no fun in this cold weather. He was looking in my direction, couldn't see me
but knew I was there and his little face said "I don't want this eye anymore, it keeps failing me, can I have a eye that works for Christmas please mum, I have been really good." He Home - Bingreally tries to play but will walk into one thing then another. Then just lays down and sighs as if he gives in. Darry does not understand. He doesn't get why Bing doesn't waHome - Bingnt to play all of a sudden.

Friday 14th Dec 2007 Bing's eye is now green and he has some sight. probably about 3-4% We are so pleased but Bing is still very quiet.

Saturday 15th Dec Bing is back. His eye is a green blue colour but he can see about 7-8% and is really making up for it. Unfortunately he came running in from the garden with grass stains on his eye and ear and has grazed his eye, where his eye brow is. He was not bothered at all, just so happy to see me.
Home - Bing

When we look back at some of the old pictures we have of Bing, we can see how far he has come in the last 4-5 months. He used to walk almost flat on his back legs but now he walks on his paws. One of the main reasons for this is we changed his food onto hills puppy with chicken.. And I think that has made all the difference. www.hillspet.com

I have heard from a dog Magazine who say they are going to write about Bing early next year. They have asked me lots of questions and I have sent them many pictures for them to choose the best ones of Bing and Darry. I will give all details of the Magazine and when Bing will be in it as soon as everything is sorted. Also I have a local newspaper who seem very interested in Bing too. Darry has asked me to tell you all that he has given blood. www.petbloodbankuk.org
Donors should have a good temperament, be aged between one and eight years old, weigh more than 25 kilos, should not have travelled abroad, should be up-to-date on all vaccinations and should be fit and healthy.
It is very easy. First he got weighed, then I answered a few questions, IE. Has he ever been abroad, received blood, on any medication etc. and then they took a little blood from his front leg. Then when all was well about 6 people lay him down and stoked him. When he was calm they then took the blood which took about 5 mins. They put a bandage round his neck which you have to take off as soon as you get home. He was given some food and had his heart rate and gums checked. When they were happy we could go. He was given a carrier bag of goodies. A ball, car sticker, biscuits etc and a bandanna. The blood is then checked for everything which would cost around £150 if you wanted that kind of test doing. The results are then sent to your own vets. We also got a blood card with Darrys blood type on it.
It is very easy and well worth doing if only for the £150 worth of blood tests. So come on give the pet blood bank a call as you just don't know, one day it might be your dog that needs the blood.

How has Darry helped Bing?
Darry has helped Bing in more ways than we will ever realize. We always thought that when a dog was wet, it would automatically shake to dry its self but Bing never would. He could be so wet, water would literally be dripping off him and he would just stand there. But one day when they were out in the garden in the rain, Darry came to the back door with Bing and as normal Darry shook himself. Bing tilted his head and we could see he was thinking and then to our surprise he shook himself a little. Now Bing knows exactly what to do to dry himself.
About 90% of dogs that see Bing are either frightened of him or want to kill him but Darry is not like all the other dogs, he loves Bing so much and now couldn't be without him. As you can see in the You Tube video, the dog in that was frightened of Bing.

BING IS GOING TO BE IN THE CHRONICLE AND ECHO NORTHAMPTON NEWSPAPER POSSIBLY CHRISTMAS EVE, BOXING DAY BUT DEFIANTLY NEXT WEEK. NO, READ THE PAPER EVERYDAY AND HE HASN'T BEEN IN. I'M SURE HE WILL BE JUST DON'T KNOW WHEN. (29/12/07) www.northamptonchron.co.uk
BING IS IN THE PAPER TODAY 01/01/08 SO GO AND BUY ONE.!!!!! THANK YOU CARLY!

K9 MAGAZINE ARE GOING TO WRITE ABOUT BING EARLY NEXT YEAR. www.k9magazine.com THANK YOU SEAN! I have found out that Bing will be in issue 23 which is out on 31st Jan 2008. Cost £5 but they have 4 magazines out a year, spring, summer, autumn and winter which means you have 3 months to save up lol!

Taking all these pictures of Darry and Bing made me realize how photogenic Darry is. I can tell him where to sit, what to do and he will do it. He even sits still until I have taken the picture. But Bing, what a wiggle bum. I have to take about 20 pictures to get 1 half decent one. He is always walking and moving unless he is asleep. So Darry is now on a dog model website. www.petlondonmodels.com/current-models.html?model_sku=1614 He would be great at advertising a hatli or something like that. But obviously Bing is also available So if you want a dog model please email me :)

My Mum and dad (Bing's grand parents) came over at Christmas and Bing was trying to drink everyones drink. All he does is sniff and walk he doesn't look where he is walking his nose takes over and thats it. I remember one morning my boyfriend was eating breakfast cereal and I was talking to him. We could see Bing sniffing the air but he was in another room and we thought the breakfast cereal was safe. The next minute Bing ran over and put his head in the cereal and pushed the bowl with my boyfriend still holding it down. Bing tried to eat so fast that that the jumper my boyfriend was wearing was covered in milk. He tried to take the bowl off him but Bing's head was firmly in the cereal. He was shouting "help, oh my god " and all I could do was laugh. So this time with the beer I would show him it and he will hate it. But no he pulled a "that was sour" face but tried to drink it anyway. So all drinks now have to be out of reach.

Home - Bing Home - Bing
Home - Bing Home - Bing

Bing had lots of presents but bless him he didn't know how to open them. We tried to show him but he just didn't understand. Darry loves opening things and so Darry opened them and Bing, well, just run around the living room exited. We were saying what a shame poor Bing not opening presents but then we realised he loves ripping card board and paper and anything he is not supposed to so he either only rips things up when he is bored or has finally realised he is not supposed to rip things.

We were a little worried about Christmas day, presents and paper everywhere but I think it was just to messy for Bing, to much to destroy. When our house is tidy and there is say a letter on the table before you can count to 10 he has knocked it off and has part of it in his mouth and his paw on it ready to rip it in half. But he never touched a thing, in fact after a while he just lay down and eat a bone. The whole day wasn't to much for him though. We tried to make it as normal as possible as he does get stressed easily. Also he had a little bacon as an extra and that was it. Working for the emergency vets especially at Christmas we see so many dogs that have eaten to much at Christmas. And so my advice for dog owners at times like Christmas. Some dogs will keep eating and never seem to get full. And these are the dogs that you have to be most careful with. By all means give them a little treat but don't over do it. We have seen complete chicken legs being brought back up before and its not a pretty sight I can tell you.

Also I must mention this. If you have a medium to large breed of dog or you dog has a large chest like a Labrador. German Shepard etc. Then NEVER feed them before a walk.ALWAYS feed your dog well after or before a walk or exercise. click on the link for the reasons www.napoleon.org.uk/health/bloat.htm

Home - BingEvery time Darry picks up a toy or a bone, Bing wants it. Even if Bing has a toy or bone he has to have Darrys. Most of the time Darry will give it to Bing and then comes to me wagging his tail with a smile on his face saying "Look mum aren't I good" but sometimes Bing grabs it and Darry then tries to pull it off him. Bing is not strong enough to take it off Darry but when Bing has it in his mouth he will never let go. Darry drags him round the room , into the kitchen and this can go on for ages. It all depend how long the toy will last. Sometimes with a bone Bing will clamp on it and Darry will then eat it like Bing is holding it for him and Bing does not notice.

We have found that Bing is very frightened of some bones and hide shoes. The first time I gave him a shoe, he crouched down weed himself and walked as low to the floor as possible across the kitchen and faced the corner with his back to me shaking. I stood there with the shoe in my hand in amazement. He had always eaten hide bones and so I couldn't understand. I walked over to him but he wouldn't even look at me. And so I had to put the shoe in another room before he would come out of the corner. But once Darry had eaten some of the shoe, he was still a little frightened of it but he picked it up and started eating it. This has happened with one other hide bone that was in the shape of a circle and again he only eat it after Darry.

Today 5th Jan 08 Bing pooed in the living room. He and Darry were running around the table as normal but then Bing just got into a pooing position and started. I ran over to him and walked him out into the garden and then shut the door. Now here was a test, I had to make sure Bing knew that pooing inside was wrong and that he only goes outside. To be honest I was very shocked, this was the first accident of any kind in 6 months.

I opened the back door and Bing was laying down, so I tapped him (which means follow me) and walked onto the garden. He walked in a very low manor and I pushed him gently onto the grass. He walked down the garden and then went for a wee. He ran back to me and tried to go straight past. I grabbed his collar, turned him around and pushed him back onto the grass. (To me and you I am saying no you haven't finished yet) He ran back down the garden , turned around, ran back to me but this time did not try and run past me. He just stood looking at me. I touched his collar and he ran back down the garden and this time went for a poo. Again he came back up to me, still quite low to the ground. I turned away from him and walked into the kitchen and he followed slowly. He did not think i was going to hurt him. He was just giving me respect and by lowering himself, he is acknowledging that I am pack leader, this is my house and that he is sorry.

If you have ever read a puppy book you will always read things like "Mistakes will happen; it’s all part of bringing up a puppy. Instead of getting annoyed with the pup or yourself, clean up any accidents which happen as quickly as possible, with the minimum of fuss." "Telling your puppy off for 'accidents' after the event will not help and may make things worse as he may avoid going to the toilet anywhere near you! " " Even if your puppy has defecated in front of you, do not say anything, just clean it up without a word." I have read the words but tonight made me realize, you really can tell dogs without words. They don't even need to see you are cross or angry etc they can feel it.

People often say to me. "How do you tell him no, or that he has done something good" And I say "The same way as you tell all dogs, cuddles, biscuits and isolation" So next time you are out with your dog on a lead and you see another dog coming. Don't think, oh my God here we go. Think that's OK its just another dog and I am in control. If you really mean it you dog will know it.

When he got inside I praised him for going outside and then he carried on playing just as normal. I don't think he will ever mess inside again. But we will just have to wait and see?

Yesterday Jan 10th 08 Market Harborough newspaper the Harborough Mail www.harboroughmail.co.uk said that Bing will be in the paper on Jan 17th (Thursday) So thank you Ian.

For the past 2 days Bing has been finding it hard to eat his food. He has been pulling a that hurts face when he tries to swallow. So Ive been adding water into his food which makes it a lot easier for him. I was hoping it was one of those things that would just get better but it didn't seem to. I cant tell you how much Bing hates being on a lead, going out, going in the car and going to the vets. And so I didn't want to take him unless I absolutely had to. But yesterday 10th I took him to the vets and they had a look at his throat. The vet said his throat was dark red and very sore. He was given 2 injections and was told that if he wasn't better by tomorrow then he will need to go back and have steroids. So fingers crossed the injections have worked.

Home - Bing

Another piece of advice, this may sound obvious but if your animal is ill, ring your vets and they should say roughly if your animal will get better in time or needs to be seen. Because some people will wait days and then sometimes what could have been treated easily can turn into an emergency. The difference in price between a day time consultation and an evening emergency consultation is about £70. So get your animal insured and micro chipped and any problem ring either the day time vets or emergency vets because that's what we are here for :)

Bing went to the vets again to have a course of anti biotic starting Saturday night and finishing Tuesday morning. Today Sunday 13th Jan his throat is so bad now, even when I put water in his food he is really struggling to eat it. This evening for his second dinner of the day he looked at his food, ran away and tried to hide because he thinks, that makes my throat hurt quick get away from it. So I soaked his food in water for a long time so it turned into sludge and gave it back to him. Eventually he started licking it. I feel so sorry for him, he loves his food and will eat anything but at the moment he wont really eat anything. Once this course has finished I will take him back to the vets for some steroids.

bingaug2007@aol.com

Bing now has his own Bank account. It makes it easier when I raise money for him and I can see now exactly how much I can spend on him..

Today 13th Jan 08 Bing needs:

  1. Hydrotherapy lessons
  2. Seeing a specialist about his hearing
  3. An activity that will stimulate his brain
  4. Occasional grooming
  5. Toys he can see
  6. Somewhere to walk him.

  1. If you want to help with Hydrotherapy lessons you can either buy a Bing badge which will help cover the cost or next time I have an event for Bing come along and buy lots of things :)
  2. Again either buy a bing badge or lots of nice things at a Bing event.
  3. If you are an agility trainer or you think you can train Bing then please email me. I am not looking for anything free please include your prices when you email.
  4. If you are a dog groomer and you think you can groom Bing without him getting too stressed. Again please email me the price as I will pay all costs.
  5. If you are out and about and see a toy and think of Bing. Please email me what the toy is and which shop you saw it. And then I can go and buy it.
  6. If you own a secure, fenced in piece of land, a large barn or somewhere I can let Bing off the lead so he can have a run round without hurting himself, where he cant escape or go to far and where I don't need to worry about any dogs. Please email me and we can come to an arrangement.
Home - Bing UNFORTUNATELY I DON'T KNOW WHEN BING'S BIRTHDAY IS SO I AM GOING TO GIVE HIM A BIRTHDAY DATE AND THAT IS GOING TO BE THURSDAY JANUARY 31ST. HE IS GOING TO BE 1 YEARS OLD!!!! And so if you want to wish him a happy birthday please email me and I will print them off and put them on the mantle.

Bing went to the vets on Tuesday 15th Jan. The Vet had a look at his throat and said he needed some different anti biotic's and some steroids. He gave him two injections and tablets for 3 days and wanted to see Bing again on Friday.

Friday Morning Bing went to the vets again but unfortunately his throat was no better despite the anti biotic's and steroids and so he was admitted and had to have a general anaesthetic. They took some swabs of the back of his throat and will send them off to a lab. The good news is, it is not anything serious as they were a little concerned it could have been.

I came home from the vets and Darry came running over to me, all happy but then his face changed when he realised I hadn't brought Bing back. He looked for him everywhere. I had to open all the doors, cupboard doors and even the drawers (yes I know) because Darry thought Bing was hiding. He looked for him all around the garden and when he finally came in he looked at me and said " OK, I cant find him but I know he is here some where so I will wait until he comes out of hiding"

I would just like to say a big thank you to everyone who works at Bing's veterinary practice and to Bing's number one fans. Thank you all for being so kind to Bing!!!

I collected Bing and bless him he was doing everything the same as normal but just at half the pace. Every so often he would just get really tied and lay down but Darry was at his side the whole day.

Saturday 27th January. Bing has been fine since the anaesthetic. No results back from the lab yet so he is still on anti biotics. The vet told me they should be back Monday or Tuesday. At the moment he is on Baytril tabs and flexicam which do seem to be working as he can eat a lot better now.

A while ago at work we had in a deaf Staffordshire bull terrier. For legal reasons I cant tell you all the details but it was brought to us as a cruelty case by the RSPCA because we believe the owner didn't realise it was deaf. A few people at work were saying how would you teach it? So the next day I emailed the RSPCA and told them if ever they had in a deaf or blind dog I will either help re home it or if the new owners need help then they can email me. The RSPCA emailed me back and said " I have also circulated your email to our nearby animal centres and inspectorate groups, and other RSPCA colleagues in the surrounding counties."
If I just wanted to be a receptionist I certainly wouldn't work there. I work in a vets because I love animals.and I want to help them.

If you have a question or want some advice about your / a deaf or blind dog. Whoever you are and where ever your from just email me.

bingaug2007@aol.com

I don't just know about deaf and blind dogs:) I do help people with their puppies up to 6 months. So if you want some advice about your puppy you know what to do.
And by the way I don't charge. But if you want to buy Bing a toy or some biscuits, I'm sure he wouldn't object ha ha!

For the past few months I have been looking for a hall to hire. And 1 week ago I found one. The only problem was I was going to hire the hall to help people with their disabled dogs and puppies up to 6 months. The 'owner' of the hall said there was already someone hiring it for dog training but I could still hire it. Being fare I thought I should contact the other dog trainer and explain what I wanted to do. And so I did but to my shock, they were quite rude and said they didn't really want me to hire it because they would loose money. Although I was only going to hire it out for 1 week or so.
They also implied that blind, deaf, disabled and normal dogs are all the same and its a behavioral problem that needs sorting? Well I wish I had never rang them now and just hired the hall. And then it hit me. These people are only in it for the money. I guess that if you went with a dog that had real problems but had no money they wouldn't help you. And that makes me realise how good Theo is. And so if you have a hall or a barn or anything really I could use please email me.

On the 17th of Jan My dad and I went to www.willowsreferrals.co.uk to haveHome - Bing Darry's eyes scored. It cost £39.00 for his eyes and will cost about £150.00 for his hip score so I thought it was better to have his eyes done first and if he fails then I haven't really lost anything. When we arrived a nurse came out into the waiting area and gave Darry some drops to dilate his pupils. About 30mins later he had his eye test. Everything was fine, he passed and so the vet stamped his kennel club certificate. We got home and bless him his eyes were still massive. His test was at 10.00am and by 5pm his eyes were still the same. About 12.30am his eyes were still big it wasn't until the 18th afternoon that his eyes were normal again. www.petplanet.co.uk/vet_answers.asp?thread_id=398

Today the 29th of Jan Bing had to go back to the vets. The vet rang me yesterday to say that the results had come back from the lab. They had found that some of the bacteria from Bing's throat was quite unusual. They recommended he goes back on Synulox anti biotic tablets for the bacteria they recognise. The unusual bacteria will need to be grown and studied as they do not know how to get rid of that. And so the results of that test should be back in 1 week (4th-5th Feb) Very expensive dog I can tell you. The total so far just for his sore throat is £289.10. Bless him he is my little pin cushion.

Bing also had a lovely present from a girl called Emma. Emma is my mums friends daughter and Emma has been to many dog show with Darry She is a really kind person who loves animals especially Darry and Bing. So thank you Emma , that was really nice of you!!!!

On the 4th of Jan I entered a competition. You had to write in about a mad moment (Make A Difference). So I wrote.

Last summer 07 I was looking at all the what's on websites trying to find companion dog shows. Somehow I found a website called Many tears and thought id have a quick look at some of the dogs that needed re homing. And there I saw a 5 month old deaf and 90% blind border collie called Bing. He has a video on youtube http://www.youtube.com/ (Bing needs a home) and after watching it, I knew I had to help him.
On the 29th July my boyfriend and I drove to Llanelli in Wales to meet him with my other dog Darry a 3 year old male Labrador. We fell in love with Bing and decided to adopt him. He is such a good boy with bags of personality, loads of energy and just loves life. He and Darry are the bestest of friends and are always together.
Bing sometimes unfortunately has bleeding behind his eyes and when this happened's he goes totally blind. But so far he has regained his sight within 2 days of having maxitrol eye drops.
I am a part time receptionist, but the knowledge and friends I have gained from work gave me the confidence to take on Bing. Now I try to help anyone who's dog has become deaf or blind. Bing has certainly made a difference in my life and I hope I will make a difference in others. http://www.bing2007.wetpaint.com/

And I won!!!! Well two of us won. If you are squeamish do not click on the link

Donor Darry is Part of a Special Family

Home - Bing Clorissa Paul from Northampton wrote in to tell us about her dog Darry that donated blood recently at one of our Blood Drives, saying that, " it went really well, was very easy and everyone was extremely nice." Clorissa was extremely proud of Darry for making his life saving donation. Darry lives at home with Clorissa, her partner and their other special dog Bing, a 10 month old deaf and 90% blind Border collie. Since Clorissa brought Bing home Darry has been an integral part of teaching Bing how to live with his disabilities. Due to the fact that Bing can't hear and has only 10% sight Darry does a lot of things to help Bing, such as letting him know when it is time to come in from the backyard by going over to him to give him a physical sign to come back in the house. Clorissa and her family have been so touched by having Bing as part of their family that she has created a website specifically to document his progress and educate other people about having a dog with a disability.
To find out more about Clorissa and her special canines please visit www.bing2007.wetpaint.com.
Pictured is Darry sporting his PBBuk bandana.

Friday 8th Feb I received the K9 magazine and Bing was in it and has two and a half pages!!!!
http://www.k9magazine.com/viewarticle.php?sid=15&aid=2248
The magazine is £3.95 plus £1.05 P&P total £5.00 but they will combine the P&P costs if you buy more than one magazine. This is from their website.

"Beating Natural Selection – When nature deals you a dud hand, life can be hard. Nothing is truer for Bing, a blind and deaf puppy who is so weak he often tumbles over in a heap. But despite his many problems, Bing has found help in an unusual form and is sidestepping nature’s cruel plan. Truly inspirational."

Home - Bing

Perhaps the cruellest part of Bing’s story to date, is that when putting his limitations aside, he is almost a typical Border Collie. Being a Border Collie, the most intelligent and mentally agile breed in the world, Bing has strong herding instincts and loves to work, but he can’t act on those impulses, which makes him visibly upset.
Home - Bing
When Bing gets upset, what limited vision he has becomes temporarily removed due to bleeding in his eye. But Bing’s story isn’t one of pity and sadness, he’s got a very dedicated and committed helper who understands his unique needs and struggles. Without the help of his carer Darry, Bing’s life would be one big struggle after the next.
“We saw Bing was looking for a home on a website (many tears rescue), so the first stage was for someone to come out and see if our house was suitable, they only wanted to re-home Bing with a family that had another dog.” Explained Clorissa Paul, Bing’s new owner.
“A few days after the inspection we drove to Llanelli in Wales. We had to take our dog Darry with us to see if he and Bing would get on. My partner and I fell in love with Bing as soon as we saw him. Darry didn't pay any attention to him, which was good enough for us. Bing was laying outside, asleep in the sun. We all walked over to the little white fluffy puppy but we couldn't wake him and realised he was one hundred percent deaf. To wake him we have to either shake him quite hard or make a shadow over his face.”
Home - Bing
With Darry’s apparent approval, Clorissa was given the go ahead to take Bing home to start his new life. But the relationship between Darry and Bing didn’t blossom immediately.
“When we got home Darry sniffed Bing all over for hours and kept looking at me as if to say ‘what is going on?’ The next day when Darry realized Bing was still here again he looked at me to say ‘when is he going home?’ Two days later Darry was looking for Bing as soon as he woke up. Five days later they were and are still inseparable. Bing was originally in kennels with lots of other dogs and cats, so he was very used to other animals. The first time he saw Darry we could all tell that he loved him. He would follow him everywhere with an expression on his face that said ‘what are we going to do now? What else are you going to show me?’”
Clorissa knew that caring for Bing would bring with a set of unique challenges, but she wasn’t prepared for just how important Darry would be in helping Bing along.
“Darry has helped Bing in more ways than we will ever realise. In our garden we have a patio and grass. Bing had never been on grass before, as his previous garden had no grass just slabs. So obviously when Bing did go to the toilet, he would do it on the patio. But within one day Darry taught him to go on the grass which he has done ever since. Darry has taught Bing how to behave in the kitchen too. For example, he showed Bing to sit when we are making food in the kitchen, because at first Bing would jump up and just try and take any food he could smell. When I call the dogs in from the garden if Bing sees Darry running in he will follow, but if it is dark or he is not looking the right way then obviously Bing is still in the garden and Darry will come in. If that is the case I say to Darry "Go and get Bing, where's Bing?" and Darry will go back outside, touch Bing and then they both come running in.
A few weeks ago my partner had been shopping and had bought a cooked chicken for himself and the dogs. Bing was outside but Darry was in the kitchen. As soon as my boyfriend got the chicken out and started cutting bits off Darry ran off. We were both very confused as Darry will do anything for chicken and always sits as soon as he can smell it. We watched Darry run into the garden and it was almost as if he said "Bing there is chicken in the kitchen, quick come in" they both ran in as fast as they could and then both sat ready. We could not believe our eyes as we thought Darry would only be too glad Bing wasn't there as that would mean more chicken for him.”
Darry’s influence on Bing didn’t stop at getting his friend involved in the kitchen. Dogs with severe disabilities are often unable to develop the skills needed for domestic life and in many cases require in depth training in order to complete very simple tasks. In Bing’s case, his training came on the job by watching Darry in action.
“We always thought that when a dog was wet, it would instinctively shake to dry itself but Bing never would. He could be so wet, water would be dripping off him and he would just stand there. But one day when they were out in the garden in the rain, Darry came to the back door with Bing and as normal Darry shook himself. Bing tilted his head and we could see he was thinking and then to our surprise he shook himself a little. Now Bing knows exactly what to do to dry himself. “
Bing’s inability to see and hear makes it difficult for him to interact with new dogs. He cannot pick up on body language, which is the main way dogs communicate, so he often finds himself struggling to make new friends.
“About ninety percent of dogs that see Bing are either frightened of him or want to kill him. He was attacked by another dog the first day I had him. A very irresponsible dog owner did not put their dog on a lead and when they saw it attacking Bing they ran off. I then realised how lucky I was that Darry was not like all the other dogs as he loves Bing so much and now couldn't be without him. Bing needs another dog to show him dog things and to play dog games. He still wants cuddles but as there are two of us, the dogs can have as much affection as they want. Bing was taken away from his mother and siblings at six weeks old, so he missed out on lots of things which Darry is now teaching him. He needs another dog to hear and see for him when humans try to communicate. Dogs can communicate with each other without sound, so I tell Darry and Darry tells Bing.”
Despite his remarkably positive and happy temperament, Bing faces new challenges every day and it takes a lot of effort from everyone in involved in caring for him to ensure that he is comfortable and safe.
“He has learnt where everything is in the house now, so we try not to move anything unless we absolutely have to. Bing does not like the car, having a lead on him or being walked. Everyday we show him his lead and he gets biscuits and some days we put his lead on him and walk him to the kitchen and that's it. He feels that wearing a lead means he has no choices and going outside for a walk is too much, too many smells, too much to take in and too much to worry about. When he is calm his eye sight is about ten percent effective, but when he is stressed it is almost like he is totally blind. You can not walk him, steer him in a direction or get through to him. When he gets stressed he sometimes has bleeding behind his eye. The vet’s think he has a blood clotting disorder. When this happens he goes totally blind for about two days. His personality changes. He walks slow, doesn't join in and just looks sad. We have been told that if he keeps having bleeding behind his eye eventually he will loose his sight forever. We spend all of our time trying to make him calm and relaxed so hopefully he will have his ten percent vision all his life.”
Bing’s physical problems are the result of poor breeding. Whilst Bing manages to make the most of his situation with the help of Darry, it is regrettable that he was born in the state that he was. Clorissa sees the positive side of Bing’s situation, but is very aware that Bing’s problems could have been avoided.
“I have been told by most vets that puppies that are not developed correctly usually don't survive birth. But if they do the mother will not feed them and they will die. Or the breeders will take the sick puppy to the vets to be euthanized. Bing is a miracle and is lucky to be alive. Some might say ‘is it fair?’ but Bing has a life, a very happy life. He is not suffering and is not in any pain. He doesn't know that he can’t hear or can’t se, it is all he has ever known. ‘Should Bing have been put down?’ If you know the puppy is not suffering and you can find it a home then fine. But otherwise no, euthanasia would have been best as no animal should ever suffer. ‘Did Bing's breeders do the right thing by Bing?’ In this case I think they did but they must never breed from the same two dogs again.”
There is no ‘owner’s guide to caring for a blind and deaf pup’, so Clorissa is learning as she goes along. She knows Bing will never see, but with the help of family, friends and Darry, she is finding ways to make Bing happy.
“We buy toys that we know he can see. They either have to be bright in colour or large in size. Being a border collie he loves playing with balls, but spends such a long time trying to find them he often just gives in. We have bought him a ball that changes colour and he can see that like a normal dog. We can roll it and he knows exactly where it is. We have taken him to an eye specialist to see if they could improve Bing's sight in anyway and sadly they can’t, but at least now we know. There are many more things that Bing needs so we have had a bazaar to raise money for him. He does cost a lot of money, so I will organise more events for him as the last fundraiser generated enough money for a dog trainer. He still needs to go to a hearing specialist, hydrotherapy lessons for his back legs and we need to find a groomer. So if anyone wants to help Bing, he wouldn't say no.”
Instinct is important to any dog and Bing is no different. His blindness and deafness have forced Bing to adapt, but in many ways his confidence and curiosity belies his limitations.
“The first time we saw Bing I said to his foster carer ‘Are you sure he is deaf and blind?’ I expected him to be very slow and deliberate and not running round like a mad thing. I also never expected him to pull on the lead, again I thought he would walk by my side as he wouldn't know where he was going. But he pulls like a train. With Bing it is trial and error, he will run and if he runs into something, he picks himself up and thinks ‘ok now I know there is something there.’ We try so hard but we can’t always keep up with him. We obviously don't want him running into things but can’t always stop him. He is just like any other life loving little dog, sometimes he get cuts and bruises, but not very often. He is very limp and when he does run into something he just ends up in a little heap on the floor, so as yet has never really hurt himself.
He wants to learn and be as normal as Darry. If he could talk he would say ‘I can do it, watch me everyone, see I am a good boy, what's next to do, what can you teach me now?’ He has a very active brain and from the second he wakes up he runs, he has no idea where, but just runs, wags his tail and says ‘right what have a missed?’”

Home - Bing 11th Feb 2008 Bing bless him has fallen over in the garden and cut his eye. No idea how he has done it because there is only grass but he has still managed it. He wasn't bothered at all. I was fussing over him and he just wanted to play and run as normal.

This picture was taken just after he had given blood, thats why he has the white bandage around his neck.
Also he is wearing a halti (gentle leader) because after giving blood its best not to have your dog on a collar or chain etc.

Bing loves to sleep in this position or with his back legs up the wall or sofa.
But he also likes to sleep all curled up like a cat.

Darrys favourite position to lay is what we call the rug. He does not sleep on our bed but when I am on the computer or upstairs he will take over the whole bed while he can. But he is very good and when I tell him 'off' he does it.

Bing is a very outdoor type dog. He prefers to drink from puddles than from a fresh water bowl. He absolutely loves mud. He loves to dig he scrapes and then jumps up to try and catch the earth and he will eat it if I don't stop him, he comes in with mud all on his face, nose and has mud all over his teeth and tongue.
Darry is the opposite if the water is not fresh he wont really drink it. And once out on a walk he held his paw up and cried. I thought he may have trod on something so I wiped off the mud from his paw and then he walked off and I realised he didn't want the mud on his paw. When I get back from walking Darry he will spend ages cleaning his paws even though I always wipe his paws before he comes in.

A special thank you to Phil Bagshaw who helped and ran a stall, Emma for running some stalls and their mum Julia who donated about 80% of the tombola prizes, James for helping me and running a stall, Gloria Jones who is a physic medium and donated half of the money she made and last but not least my mum and dad for all their help and for making cakes, teas, donating things and helping me get everything organised!!!

The Bing bazaar raised £180.60 (-£52.50 for the hall) plus a £25.00 donation from a wonderful lady
Total £153.10
Hydrotherapy lessons are £30 for the first lesson and £22 after that or you can pay £200.00 for 10 lessons
A hearing specialist is about £160.00 for a consultation and any treatment is on top of that.
The money raised at the bazaar is for hydrotherapy lessons.

Unfortunately we only sold 16 tickets on the raffle and so it is now going to be drawn Easter Sunday March 23rd if you would like a ticket 20p or a strip £1 please email me.

When I volunteered at the pet blood bank a gentleman came with his 7 greyhounds and yes all 7 gave blood. They were all so well behaved, nice, calm, laid back and just wanted attention and cuddles. To be honest I was quite amazed as I had never really met anyone who owned a greyhound before. They may run fast but they still want to be loved and looked after the same if not more than some other dogs. Please see the website www.thebeastlybeasts.co.uk (Thank you both for coming to the Bing Bazaar if ever you hold anything again or need my help just ask!!)

Bing had to have a bath because he came in from the garden yellow. His head and down his back was yellow, wet and smelly. I'm sure you can guess what happened. Darry will always cock his leg but Bing does not. I don't think he will ever be able to as he can not stand on 3 legs. Darry will go to the toilet and Bing loves to run. He will run up and down the garden all day if he could.

Home - Bing

He is very good and will just stand there and let us wash him. But does look rather sorry for himself.

Home - Bing

He loves to be dried and loves having a towel on him although it may not look like it in this picture. If they outside and it is raining I call them in and hold a towel and Bing comes running over to be dried.
Home - Bing
He doesn't mind being dried with a dryer as long as it is done quick. But being brushed is a no. He just runs and runs. There is only one brush we can use on him but having a bath, being dried is enough he really doesn't like it but if I brush him and nothing else he is fine and even likes it and lays down to let me brush his belly. Saying that he has NEVER growled or bitten. He just runs away.

Home - Bing

And yes Darry is with him, he is always with him no matter what. They are friends for life.

I have looked on ebay and amazon but there doesn't seem to be any. If anyone knows anywhere that sells them please email me as I know Bing and Darry would love it. Bingaug2007@aol.com

These pictures were taken 23rd March 2008
Darry has seen snow before. He just loves running round and round the garden as fast as he can slipping all over the place and then stopping to sniff a bit and then back to running again.
Bing has not seen snow before and when I first let him out, as soon as his feet touched the snow he turned around and came straight back in. Eventually he came out after all of us having to stand outside with him.
All he wanted to do was eat it. One little mouthful is not going to kill him but he would have eaten the whole garden if I had have let him.
I wouldn't say he didn't like the snow, more he didn't understand it. Because it was all gone a few hours later he just accepted it. If it is there is it, if it isn't then it isn't. Darry on the other hand was looking for it. He didn't understand how it could go so quickly. If you have any pictures of your dog in the snow I would love to see them and maybe I could put a few pictures on this website. Please send them to Bingaug2007@aol.com and let me know if you want them on this site.

Bing is in Dogs Today magazine from April 3rd. I received my copy, 1st April. It is really lovely. Thank you so much Luke! Bing has won the Good Boy Good Dog award for May 2008 and will be receiving his Good Boy hamper soon.

Monday 7th April 2008 you could say was a slightly different day than normal. Yes the day has come, Bing is going to be on the TV.
I had an email from a lady from dog in a box. http://doginabox.com/ A TV and film production company. They wanted Bing for Animal planets Animal Crackers.
On the 7th A lovely camera lady came over about 11.30am to film all four of us. It was a dry warm day so we were very lucky and got some great footage outside in the sheep fields on a walk and of Bing and Darry playing in the garden.
This will be aired in the summer around July August they think but as soon as I have a date I will let you know.
Overall I thought the whole day went really well. Bing was his usual shelf which was great, he wasn't put off by the camera at all and Darry, well what can I say. He did everything I asked. I couldn't of wished for him to have been any better.

Today 9th April I had an email from the editor of 'Hondenleven' magazine, one of the leading dog magazines in The Netherlands and Belgium. They would like to feature this website on their special website-page called 'WWWoef'. And are planning to mention this site in their July issue that will be published mid June. They kindly said they would send me a copy.

I am very pleased to say that at last Bing and Darry have their own video on You Tube. Firstly the videos took ages to make and then they were not in the right format for You Tube and had to be converted but finally last night 13th April I did it.

In Bing's video it is my boyfriend that enters Bing in the "Trick" category of a dog show. where bing sits and gives paws.
Well that was supposed to be me until my lovely yellow dog pulled on the lead to get to another border collie and broke my finger. I had to spend the whole day holding an ice pack. As it was my right hand and I am right handed, it made things difficult to say the least. This happened the end of September 07. Now as anyone who has broken something knows, it gets stuck quite often, really hurts when it is cold and is not the same as my other finger.

10th April I let Bing and Darry into my Garden as normal. About 1 minute later Bing came running into the kitchen all flustered. He was running round in circles and really panting. He then ran back outside and so I followed trying to catch him so see what was wrong with him. He ran over to the bushes on the right hand side of our garden. And as I walked over to him to my amazement I could see Darry in next doors garden. He must have got under the fence and Bing was telling me.
Did Bing know that Darry was not allowed into next doors garden or was he worried because he couldn't follow him or see where he was? Either way I am very glad he told me. Thank you Bing.

15h April I gave Bing and Darry the large real bone (not hide) that I got from the Good Boy Hamper. That night Darry was sick. He brought up all he food and more. But he seemed fine. I thought it might be the bone as I only let them eat hide bones and so I threw it away.
The following morning Darry seemed fine.

Home - Bing
We all went out for an afternoon walk. and poor Darry had diarrhea. About 20mins into it Bing did not want to walk anymore. So we stopped for a while. Then again he didn't want to walk. He was holding the lead in his mouth and pulling on it to stop us from walking forward. He then refused to walk at all. As we tried to encourage him he just threw himself on the floor. So my poor boyfriend had to carry him home and he loved it. He was having a good look round and sniffing the air. As this was not like Bing I checked him all over to see if he was hurt but he seemed fine and when we got home he ran about as normal. Later that evening Bing was sick. And that night Bing and Darry just laid down and didn't really want to play. Both their noses were dripping down their chests.
The next day I got them both checked over and it seems they were both allergic to the Bone.

Wednesday 23rd April I took Bing to his first hydrotherapy lesson. When I arrived I was taken into the pool area and they asked lots of questions about Bing. Then they took some measurements, his chest size to see what size jacket he needed and his back legs so they can tell if his mussels are getting bigger the more he swims etc. They washed him down and put him into the jacket. At first he really couldn't swim and the lady was just holding him and pulling him through the water but after a few times he was moving his front legs. He tucks his back legs up and kind of sticks his bum into the air. On his own he would never be able to swim but at the end of the session he was alot better.
They helped him out of the pool and washed him down again. It was only when they stared to dry him that the lady noticed blood on the floor. At first we didn't know where it was coming from and then we saw it was coming from his foot. It looked worse because of the water but it seemed to have stopped almost straight away.
I took Bing home and noticed his foot was still bleeding as there was a little blood in the car. So I decided to ring my vets as it had been bleeding a little now for 1 hour. They said they would like to look at him and gave me an appointment in 3 hours.
By this time Darry was crying and crying and panting and just getting himself in a real state. He was licking Bing's foot and stressed himself out so much he was sick. He must have thought that we just put Bing into the kitchen (so he didn't get blood on the carpet) and were going to leave him there to die. I tried everything to calm Darry down but he wouldn't listen.

Home - Bing Home - Bing

Home - Bing We had a good look and it seemed as though he had caught his claw. It looked like his claw was cut to short. The only thing I can think of is he must has done it on the drain when he was being washed.

So we put Bing back in the car and took him to the vets and when we arrived and got him out of the car I couldn't believe what I saw. He was covered in blood, his lead, his bed and everything. We carried him in. He was in the waiting room for about 2mins and they had to come out and mop the floor. When the vet saw him I said all he had done was caught his claw but the vet wanted to check for other cuts as he couldn't believe he could bleed so much from such a tiny thing. He put some silver nitrate on his claw to stop the bleeding and luckily it did because other wise they would have had to keep him in.

silver nitrate applicators If the claw is cut too short, you can use a styptic pencil containing silver nitrate to stop blood flow. The black end of the stick is held to the bleeding nail and gently rotated.
Even without any treatment the nail should stop bleeding in about 5 minutes or less.

They realised as did I that Bing has a blood clotting disorder. I took Bing home and he was in a lot of pain and seemed in a kind of shock. Darry was worse this time seeing Bing covered in blood. He had really bad diarrhea and was sick again. So we put Bing to bed and Darry just wanted him to come out. In the end we had to shut the door because Darry was fussing over Bing and Bing was getting cross because he wanted to sleep as he was in pain. So Darry just sat by the door crying. He wouldn't eat, drink or do anything.

Home - Bing

I just don't know about taking Bing back to hydrotherapy lessons for many reasons. For one I don't want him to hurt himself again.

Home - Bing Home - Bing

It has taken Bing 4 days to get over what has happened. Today Sunday 27th April he is back to normal.
CAN ANYONE PLEASE HELP!!!
What can I do, is there a cure for a blood clotting disorder. Some people say yes and some say no. (if I am out and he really cuts himself he could have bled to death by the time I get him to a vet)
His claws don't seem to grow. What can I do or he will keep catching them.

It has been a real tough few days. Darry still had diarrhea the next day but he is OK now. Bing needed lots of cuddles and really only wanted to sleep. So please if you are a vet or you have some advice please email me Bingaug2007@aol.com thanks.

Over the weekend my boyfriend and I went to a dog show. Darry entered most handsome dog, dog the judge would most like to take home and most appealing eyes but was not placed. Bing entered Best rescue and came first and even won a trophy!!!!!

" All that winning makes me tired"

Bing does like going to dog shows but gets tired and board easy. He only really enters 1 category and then has a walk round food, water fuss off other people and thats enough for him. Darry would be there all day if he could and thats why he enters a few category's. I am no mathematician but Darry entering 9 most handsome categories and not ever being placed in the top 6 must mean he is ugly right? One dog show we went to last year as normal Darry didn't come anywhere and was put in the without a Rosette category. 6 places and there was 8 of us. When he wasn't picked the judge came up to the two of us and said "never mind" and handed us a tin of dog food. The other lady came up to me and said this was her first dog show, she only entered 1 category and her dog was very frightened and wouldn't let the judge touch her. Which really means Darry was the worst dog in the whole show.

Why am I telling you this? Well Darry is certainly not ugly, nor is he the worst dog. So if you have ever entered a dog show and have not won, don't worry. Its all a bit of fun and doesn't mean anything. Yes its nice to win but remember same dogs, different judge = different winners every time I bet. So keep going to dog shows and remember your the winner because you get to take the best dog in the world home. Home - Bing

On the 18th May we all went to another dog show. Bing entered Best rescue and came 3rd and Darry entered AV gundog, handsomest dog, dog judge would like to take home and Best group with Bing and again was not placed.
Ok so that's 39 classes and 6 times Darry has been placed well better than 0/39 and then I watched the video I took of Darry in the fancy dress class in which he came sixth and to my surprise when I counted, yes, there were only 6 people who entered, again with most appealing eyes which he came 6th and only 5 dogs caught a biscuit which he came 5th.Oh dear, it shouldn't be but its quite funny really. and so the next class he enters at a dog show will be his 40th
Fingers crossed. No, really I don't care anymore I must say I used to but now I think of it as going out for the day with Bing and Darry, giving money to charity and practicing ring craft.

Bing and Darry still play with their treat ball that was given to them by Jane, Gill and Gylnness. Darry rolls it around and Bing eats most of the treats. Together they are a great team!!!

(I'll just tell you about 1 more dog show I promise.) On the 26 May 2008 Bank holiday Monday we all went to another dog show. Darry entered most handsome dog, best condition / movement and dog the judge would like to take home, well I'm sure you know the result by now. Prettiest bitch 4 people entered mainly because it was really windy and really raining and I thought yes Darry is going to come somewhere and then when they called most handsome dog and there were 12 of us. Isn't that typical. I always say to Darry "Your the wrong breed no one is going to pick a common yellow Labrador and now you are the wrong sex" ha ha. Bing entered Best rescue dog and came 5th. No seriously why doesnt Darry ever come anywhere? I don't know if you have any tips or advice please email me Bingaug2007@aol.com

Now it is Summer well kind of, Ive got some of my agility equipment out. Darry can do everything with no problem, Bing, well cant do the dog walk, seesaw or the A frame. I may try and teach him the weaves and a small jump but he CAN do the tunnel and he really likes it and even goes in it by himself. All I did to teach him is get Darry to run through a few times first and then Bing followed him.

Home - Bing

As I have said before I don't know exactly when Bing was born but he is well over a year now and bless him he still doesn't cock his leg. I don't think he can stand on 3 legs but within the last week he has started to wee slightly different. He twists his hips and wees to the side and when he is finished he lifts one of his back legs up in the air for a second and then runs off and seems really pleased with himself.

He is much better now when we eat, he will try to eat our food at first but then he will lie down and you can eat in piece but every minute or so Bing gets his front paw and will either hit the floor hard or my leg as if to say I'm here and I'm being good so can I have your food now. He will do it through out the whole time I or my boyfriend eats. I suppose when you cant hear and can hardly see you think all people are the same and if he doesn't tap me I wont realise he is there. Bless him.

Bing also seems better in the car now. When he first goes into the car cage he doesn't like it, but after about 10seconds he calms down and has even laid down. The first time he laid down we pulled over because we thought something was wrong with him. Again I'm not sure why. Maybe because he is getting older, getting used to the car or maybe because Darry is next to him in the cage? But what ever the reason I am pleased for him as I hate to see him so stressed.

On the 1st June 08 I had a wonderful email from a lady called Ann. Part of the email reads "I am a professional dog groomer, and I realise I'm probably too far away, because I live in Scotland ....If I can be of any help at all - and I really mean it!!! please e mail me. the offer stands indefinitely!! Anyway, a top to toe pamper is at Bing's disposal anytime at all!!!

Thank you so much Ann and I would just like to say a big HELLO to Creature Comforts near Balloch.
I don't know when but I will take you up on the offer one day.

On the 8th June we all attended a dog show in Milton Keynes called The Big Doggie Do and it was really good. We walked round for about 10-15 minutes but Bing became to hot. We tried to cool him down with wet towels and gave him plenty to drink but he was still to hot and so we decided to go home. As we were packing up there was an announcement, their best dressed dog category was going to be judged in 2 minutes so I said ill quickly enter this and Ill meet back at the car. Darry wore his Santa paws top and Bing's shoes. We were told to walk around the ring to show everyone who was watching round the outside. Altogether there was about 10 -12 of us who had entered and to my absolute shock Darry came second, yes second. It was great but no one saw me. Isn't that typical ha ha.
If you were there that day and you have any pictures please please send them to me!!

Sunday 15th June started off as any other normal day. My boyfriend let Bing and Darry out into the garden but noticed there was something else coming out of Bing's bottom. Then he shouted "quick get here now" I came running and there was blood dripping off the back of Bing's legs. We checked the garden and he had passed faeces but also allot of blood.
I know that when a dog strains to hard or has diarrhea for a while it can cause some bleeding but this to me seemed quite allot. So I had to take him (because it was a sunday) down to the emergency vets. He was given some synulox tablets (Synulox Palatable Tablets have a notably broad spectrum of bactericidal activity against bacteria commonly found in cats and dogs. It is an anti biotic) and prokolin 30ml tube.(For use in the treatment of diarrhoea and supplied in an easy to use calibrated syringe. Probiotics are live microbial supplements given by mouth to improve the balance of microorganisms in the intestinal tract, combat bacterial overgrowth and episodes of diarrhoea caused by a transient imbalance of the gut flora.
They are entirely natural substances being presented in an oil base and not a water base; hence the bacteria are only activated once swallowed. The probiotic micro-organisms are thought to suppress harmful bacteria such as E. coli and salmonella as well as being engaged in vitamin production and digestion of food components. The aim is to restore and maintain normal gut function.)
The rest of the day he was so clingy, would not leave my side and he was crying a little. His back legs were so weak and if I touched his back with my finger he would just lay down.
Later I let Darry and Bing out into the garden again and Darry was just staring at me.
Darry has two types of stare, the normal which doesn't mean anything and the I want something stare where you can almost feel it. And this was the serious stare. I walked over to him and he was telling me that Bing was laying in the tunnel. He had gone into it as normal but then he legs gave way and he couldn't get out. Darry couldn't help Bing but he knew something was wrong so he stayed by his side and got some help.

  1. Seeing a specialist about his hearing
  2. An activity that will stimulate his brain
  3. Occasional grooming
  4. Toys he can see
  5. Somewhere to walk him.
  6. Blood clotting tests done (Pt, Ptt, platelets etc.)

  1. Next time I have a Bing bazaar please come along and tell all your friends.
  2. If you are an agility trainer or you think you can train Bing then please email me. I am not looking for anything free please include your prices when you email.
  3. If you are a dog groomer and you think you can groom Bing without him getting too stressed. Again please email me the price as I will pay all costs.
  4. If you are out and about and see a toy and think of Bing. Please email me what the toy is and which shop you saw it. And then I can go and buy it.
  5. If you own a secure, fenced in piece of land, a large barn or somewhere I can let Bing off the lead so he can have a run round without hurting himself, where he cant escape or go to far and where I don't need to worry about any dogs. Please email me and we can come to an arrangement.
  6. I would like him to have what ever tests are available so I know what type of blood clotting disorder he has. And to find out if there is anything that will help him.

1st July 2008 I noticed a black mark on Bing's nose. At first I thought it was just dirt but after close inspection I could see it was not dirt, his nose had changed colour. He is not a puppy so I couldn't understand why it would change literally over night. Then my heart sunk. What if it was something bad, because of being pink and being in the sun to much? I couldn't sleep all night with worry. I knew that if you caught it early enough there is always a good chance of getting rid of it. The next day I took Bing to my vets. The vet had a good look and finally said it wasn't cancer. But I will need to monitor it, if it changes colour, shape, size etc then he will need to be seen ASAP. I don't know what cancer or other diseases look like, and anyway Bing doesn't seem to follow the normal rules when it comes to illness so what ever it is I always like to get a vet to have a look. Unfortunately I see it all to often, dogs with cancerous lumps which the owner hasn't noticed because the dog has long fur. I know that may sound stupid but can you say you know every inch of your dog? Great if you are saying yes. My advice, once a week feel your dog all over, back of their legs, under their throat and in between their pads on all their feet etc. Have a look in their ears and in their mouth. It is much easier to see when you know what is normal.

In the afternoon of the 10th July Bing was very clingy. He just leaned on me where ever I went. He would not get off the sofa and kept trying to climb on my lap and just generally on me even my head. I thought this was odd but just one of those things. I walked into the kitchen and Bing ran after me, he then started shaking so much that his legs went from underneath him. The back door was open and Darry was outside and so I screamed to Darry "help me there is something wrong with Bing" Darry came running in and straight over to Bing. Although Bing was still shaking when he saw Darry he tried to get up. The next hour he had stopped shaking but seemed frightened if he wasn't leaning against something and seemed to be looking at something that was high up near the celing, goes round the room a bit and then lands on the floor but of cause there was nothing there. fearing that something was very wrong I rang the vets and took him straight down. He was given a dap collar Home - Bingand Valium tablets.

Help comfort both puppies and adult dogs in challenging situations outside with the DAP Collar. The DAP (Dog Appeasing Pheromone) Collar is is recommended to: Help a puppy settle into a new environment away from its mother and siblings Help a rescue dog adjust to a new home and family Help dogs remain calm during a stay in kennels Ensure a puppy’s first experiences of new activities are positive, especially during the socialisation period Help dogs cope with novel and unpredictable situation away from the home Help dogs exhibiting fear related reactions outside the home when encountering traffic, other dogs, thunderstorms, gunshots etc. The DAP Collar works by releasing a constant stream of synthetic dog appeasing pheromone for a period of about 4 weeks. The dog appeasing pheromone is a substance produced naturally by a lactating bitch to reassure and calm her puppies, as they explore and learn about the world around them. Importantly this pheromone is also proven to have a positive relaxing and comforting influence on adult dogs, increasing their confidence in the outside world and make the process of accepting new or difficult situations more relaxed and less challenging.

And yes it worked great he was fine the next day and everyday after that until 29th July 2008. Again he was fine up until the afternoon. I was sitting on the sofa with Bing next to me. Darry just walked passed Bing and I saw out of the corner of my eye Bing's lip was curled up showing his teeth and before I had a chance to think Bing leaned forward and bit Darry on the face about 3-4 times very quickly. I grabed Bing's collar and took him into the kitchen and shut the door. I checked Darry and he was fine. He did squeal bless him but he did nothing back to Bing. I left Bing in the kitchen for a long time thinking of how two dogs that love each other that much for 1 year could suddenly be like this. My Boyfriend came home from work and I told him what had happened. We let Bing back into the living room and everything was ok for about half an hour. Darry walked over to Bing and and sniffed his mouth Bing looked terrified tail between his legs ears back and as we went to grab Bing's collar again he went for Darry and again Darry did nothing. We kept them apart that night but Darry didn't understand he just wanted Bing and didn't think anything was wrong.

Home - Bing
30th July the next day I watched Bing and he seemed ok in the kitchen but not to sure in the living room. I let them both out for a wee in the garden and Bing kept starring at Darry with a tilted head and sometimes hackles as if he did not know what Darry was. When Darry got close Bing ran off and hid. (Don't worry I would NEVER put Darry or Bing in any danger and Bing did not and will not ever bite Darry again like that.) Bing ran up the garden to have a wee and then fear came over him. He had full hackles, he was barking and crying and running round like he had no idea where he was and this had nothing to do with Darry as he wasn't about. I rang my vets but by this time it was 5pm and so I am going to the vets tomorrow 31st July. (But just to make mattes worse I was told by the receptionist that Bing's vet who he always sees is leaving "when is he leaving" I asked "today is his last day" she said) I have found it so hard to find a vet that sees Bing as Bing and is not frighted to help him. Bing has seen about 10 vets and he was the best vet Bing had ever seen.
This seems the same as last time but different in the sense that he doesn't recognise Darry but he only bit Darry because he was frightened. Yes he will probably have another Valium tablet and it will probably work but for how long? And why is this happening? Bing is not horrible and I don't blame him nor does Darry. There is something wrong that makes him that frightened he doesn't recognise anything and unfortunately that means Darry at this moment.

(This picture is not relevant but I think its funny)
Today Bing seems to be getting used to Darry he will sniff him for a min but then runs off which is better. I am still going to my vets as I want to know why this keeps happening. Dog you are costing me a fortune ha ha. ill see what tests the vets want to do and I may have to have a charity bucket on Saturday at this rate. But seriously what ever it takes and how ever much it takes we will get you back to normal Bing because we all want you back especially Darry.

31st July The worst day ever!!! I took Bing to the vets. He didn't enjoy the car journey without Darry and when we arrived again he didn't like being on a lead in the waiting room and was barking so we were took to a very small room to wait for the vet. As my normal vet had left I requested a vet that Bing had seen once before. So I was sitting in this small hardly lit room and Bing did not like it, the shadows were odd to him and he was a little frightened. All of a sudden he had a panic attack and cowered right down started biting at his lead frantically and spinning around and before I realized he had bitten my arm. It was so quick it was over in a second. I looked at him and I could tell he didn't know what he had done he was bright pink, puffing and panting and shaking. I looked at my arm there was one tooth mark which had just broken the skin. All of a sudden a lady walked into the room and said " I have looked at Bing's notes and what do you want me to do?" Thinking who are you, your not the vet I requested. I said " I would like him to be on something that will calm him down and stop him having these panic attacks" With that see replied "he needs putting to sleep" I felt like she had come into the room slapped me round the face and kicked the legs from under me. I just broke down and started crying. I showed her my arm hoping that she would say lets clean that up for you. But she just said " he has a brain disease and needs putting to sleep." All I could do was cry. I told her no that is not an option. She called in a nurse and they took some blood to test his liver and kidneys. She tried so many times from his leg it blunted the needle and had to try a new one. Still unsuccessful she finally took some blood from his neck, showing how stressed he was. The vet told me "we will test his blood and if he is OK we will put him on phenobarbital for one month, if he has not improved there is nothing else that can be done and he will need putting to sleep" I left the vets £90 down and cried all the way home and all night.

Has your dog ever bitten or tried to bite another dog? Has your dog ever bitten you either by accident or on purpose? And have you ever had a dog put to sleep because of it? I have had Bing one year and he has NEVER bitten Darry or any other dog before and he has NEVER bitten me or anyone before or EVER showed any signs of aggression..

It seems Bing has a very mild form of epilepsy and as you know when a dog has a fit they have no idea what they are doing and they just loose control. Well its the same as Bing. When he has these panic attacks which has happened about 3-4 times in 1 month lasting about 5-10 seconds each. He doesn't know what he is doing and cant remember anything after.

1st August. The vet called me and said the blood results came back and he was OK to go on Phenobarbital and so my mum went to collect the pills. Again the vet came out and said to my mum that she is giving Bing one month of tablets and that he needs putting to sleep. My mum like me cried all the way home.

2nd August. Bing has been on the tablets for 2 days now. He and Darry are back to normal and the tablets are really taking effect. He is very unsteady on his feet and is falling all over the place and bless him he even fell face down in his food. But every time he falls and especially if he cries Darry runs straight over to him every time.

I have composed myself now and have realised how wrong and out of order the vet was. She didn't have to keep saying he needs putting to sleep especially seeing how upset I was. She should have cleaned my arm or let me do it. And if you ever read this Mrs vet " EUTHANASIA IS A LAST RESORT NOT FIRST, AND IF YOU THINK HE SHOULD BE PUT TO SLEEP THEN YOU HAVE FAILED."

Bing is fine and so on to happier things now the FUN DOG SHOW!!!!!

I would just like to say a Big thank you to: My Mum who took all the pictures and much much more
My dad who set everything up on the day and much much more
James my boyfriend for all his help
Janet for taking the entries and sorting out all the winners bags
Janet's son for writing on the classes board and helping Janet
Caroline for handing out all the dog chews
Alan and little Andrew for helping with the jumps
Phil for timing the jumps and helping get set up.
Without your help there would not have been a show so thank you all very much.

Friday 1st August Bing started his phenobarb tablets 1 1/2 in the morning and 1 1/2 in the evening. The vet said he must have the tablets with food 12 hours apart. If it doesn't work within 2 weeks then they will up the dosage. Well that night he was very tired. Saturday morning his back legs were very weak , Sunday he could just about walk and Monday he couldn't get out of bed, eat, drink or go to the toilet. He fell head first in his food bowl and laid down in the garden and weed him self. I thought this is stupid so I rang my vets and told them he needs to have less. They said give him 1 1/2 in the morning and 1 in the evening? still to much I think. That night I spoke to my friend vet who is very caring and a very good vet. She said yes there is something wrong in Bing's brain but it is not epilepsy or fits as such. And she doesn't think he should be on phenobarb because of the damage it can cause to his liver and kidneys. I told her that the vet said there is nothing else and that she thinks Bing should be euth? My friend told me that there is food by Hills called BD (Brain Diet) http://www.hillspet.com/zSkin_2/products/product_details_eu.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524441760517&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=1408474395183417&bmUID=1218069238109&bmLocale=en_GB
It does not cause any damage and should take about 3 months to work. My friend recomended that Bing has 1/2 tablet in the morning and 1/2 tablet in the evening for 3 months with the food and then just continue with the food. But the main thing is she does not think Bing should be euth and there are things out there that may help him.
Tuesday (now on 2 halves a day) Bing was better but still could hardly walk in the mornings.
Wednesday was unsteady in the morning but later was about 80% normal and was running round the garden with Darry as if to say "I'm back everyone"
I have ordered Bing's food but it is just over £20 for a 5kg bag. I feel a Bing bazaar coming on.
Bing and Darry are back to normal and I feel much better.

From Thursday the 7th August Bing has been fine and is still OK today Monday 18th. No problems at all, nothing. I am very please and so is Darry. My boyfriend is doing an electrical course in Birmingham at the moment and I have to take him to the train station and back everyday, so Bing has his first tablet (half) at 6.30am and then his second 6.30 at night which is great. I'm always up and I'm always in at them times but when it comes to weekend that's where it gets hard. I'm shall we say not someone who is normally up at 6.30am at weekends and so we take it in turns. My boyfriend gets up on the Saturday and I get up on the Sunday. It sounds easy just giving a dog a tablet and Bing is great for taking them he will eat anything but it is quite hard. So anyone out there who does have to give their dogs tablets or injections regularly a great big well done from me!!!

Sunday 17th August we took Darry to a dog show. I thought it was best to give Bing a break from this one as I don't want to over do things with him at the moment. He has been through a lot bless him.
And so I entered Darry in Most Handsome, Most appealing eyes, Best condition, Judge would like to take home and best trick. And................ Yes his record has been broken after 14 different dog shows, 14 different judges he came......................................2nd for most handsome.
And I think it was against 20+ others. No he didn't come anywhere in any other class but that doesn't matter he is now officially not ugly ha ha.

If you have something to say on this subject then please email me and I will put your comments on this site .

My mum found a dog show in the local paper which was on Saturday 23rd August. And so me, Darry and mum went along. It was in a very public place with lots of people and it wasn't on grass and knowing Bing I knew he would hate it so my boyfriend stopped at home with Bing. I had also told my Friend about it and she said she would come and have a look. She helped me at my dog show which was the first one she had ever been to and has now got the bug.
Darry bless him is not really used to a lot of traffic and has only ever seen a few buses in his time but he coped very well. Many people came over and stroked him and he really enjoyed it. I entered him in Most handsome, AV pedigree and most like his owner. Before you say anything I know we don't look anything like each other so we both wore shoes and a blue neck tie and he came 2nd. OK so there was only 3 of us but still, he came home with something.

Bing does not like the rain at all and hates getting his feet wet which is quite funny considering he is such filthy little monster. We have a downstairs toilet which if we don't shut the door he will quite happily drink from it instead of his water bowl. To get him to go and not hold it until it stops raining I either tell Darry to go with him onto the grass or I have to stand out there with him. When they come back in I always towel dry them and wipe their paws. Darry is great I tell him and he will lift up his paws and sometimes even his back paws so I can dry them. Bing also likes being dried I hold up the towel and he will run over. But on the 4th September I had a big shock. As normal I let them out and it was wet. When they came in I reached for a towel and held it up. Bing came over but was still messing about and walking around. As I turned around to close the back door Bing had a big stretch and racked his claws down my leg by mistake. I screamed loud enough to wake the dead and to my surprise Bing cowered down walked over to me slowly, turned around and stood as still as a statue. At first I didn't understand what he was doing and then it was clear. He thought I was cross because he was messing about and I couldn't dry him and so he stood in a perfect drying position for me. I dried him and patted him which means he can go but still not moving he tured his head and looked at me as if to say 'are you sure, I can stand hear as long as you like' I patted him again and he walked off very slowly and very sensibly.
What shocked me the most was not that he may have heard me, it was that he knows how to be and act when I dry him. I didn't tell him what to do, which means he is far brighter than he lets on and he can do things he just chooses not to.

Naughty boy.Its quite unusual for him. Well at least it was a box of tissues and not anything important.

Bing and Darry love play fighting. Bing will bite (gently) Darrys paws and then Bing will lay down. If Darry doesn't respond Bing will bang his front paw on the floor until he does respond. Darry then bites Bing's neck (gently) and ears and growls very loud which sounds like a dinosaur. He only ever does it in Bing ears and I'm sure Bing can hear it. Bing bites anything he can. Sometimes Darry neck, face, lip and holds on for about 5 seconds (still very gently) One very unfortunate day for Darry as usual they were fighting but I noticed Darry had a very strange look on his face, leaning over to see what was happening I could see Bing had hold of well lets just say a pair of something he shouldn't have. Darry bless him just stood there holding his breath.
Darry will often roll on Bing as they are playing and they just lay there almost like they are cuddling but with their teeth showing.

Home - Bing

Bing now loves cuddles and will lay with my boyfriend for ages. As long as nothing else is going on, no one is walking about or Darry is doing anything interesting he will lay on the sofa for hours. Even 6-8 months ago 5 minutes for him would be good but it shows how relaxed and used to us he is now.

Home - Bing

Bing just wanted me to tell you all that he LOVES gravy bones and his favorite toys are on a rope. Like a tennis ball or a rubber bell etc. He holds the rope in his mouth and runs round and round the coffee table swinging it from side to side
then stops and throws it in the air, finds it, picks it up and then runs round the coffee table and will do this forever if he could.

On the 7th September we went to our favorite dog show of the year. It was really good except it was a little muddy.
we arrived at 12 noon and didn't leave until gone 5pm so it must be Bing's favorite dog show too.
Bing entered best pair, special dogs dogs with disabilities, best rescue, best trick and fancy dress.
Darry entered best pair, owner most like its dog, most appealing eyes, best trick and fancy dress.

A big thank you to everyone involved at the dog show, it really is (and not because we did well) the best dog show!!!

17th September Bing is still 100% OK. He has not had any problems at all.
I noticed that sometimes, never indoors only outside, Bing will loose it completely. There is nothing I or Darry can do, its like he completely switches everything off. No food, toys or tapping can get his attention. It is not really a problem but its something I would like to change. Up until the dog show on the 7th September we had accepted this behaviour as "that's what Bing does" but at the dog show although he was still being his usual self I could see in his eye that there was something to work with. He is really hard work when we are out but now I see a light at the end of the tunnel.
I never thought he would wag his tail but he does now, I never thought I could eat in front of him and trust him with food but I can now and I never thought he would know which food bowl was his and not to eat from Darrys but he does and so I know that one day he will be great on a lead and perfect when we are out, it may take some time but it will happen one day.

Home - Bing

Bing now loves walking upstairs and can almost do it without any help. Every time Darry sees Bing going upstairs he gets so exited. He runs up and down and then sits or lays at the top wagging his tail against the banister and then makes his yawning sound. When Bing has reached the top they both run into our bedroom and run around like puppies. Bing will often find a bit of hide bone and will eat it on Darrys bed. Darry then picks up a toy, Bing sees what Darry has got, gets up, drops the bone and then gets the toy off Darry. Darry will then pick up the bone. Bing sees what Darry has got and drops the toy and gets the bone off Darry. Darry will pick up something else and it goes on like this for ages.
Darry does use this technique to his advantage sometimes. If Bing has something Darry wants he knows all he has to do is pick something else up and make it look interesting and Bing bless him always drops what he has and tries to get Darrys. Darry will then pick up the item and put it somewhere high were Bing cant get it.

Bing has a very good skill. He can be asleep in the kitchen. I can walk in turn on a light, radio and do what ever nothing really wakes him. Only if I have been downstairs, acting normal with the lights on or the TV on and I have always been awake and not just woke up.. But If I come downstairs in the morning (or anytime really) and do nothing, just sit on the sofa. No change of light sound or even go into the kitchen where he is sleeping and after about 2-3 mins he will wake up and bark. He cant hear us nor can he see us but he knows. Maybe our smell is so strong to him it wakes him? Who knows.

On the 20th September we went to our last dog show of the year. It was a very hot day and there were allot of classes so we decided not to take Bing and it was about a 50 min car journey there anyway.
And who should be there but my best in show and reserve best in show friends (from Bing's fun dog show)

No but honestly there is nothing better than coming away knowing that you did your best and you had a great day out. A rosette is just a bonus. STARDOM beckons for an albino dog born deaf and almost blind, after his Maidwell owners were paid a visit by a TV crew.
Border collie Bing, who was born completely deaf, has only one working eye and experiences walking difficulties, is set to appear on Animal Crackers – a programme about entertaining and amazing animals from around the world.
His owners Clorissa Paul and her partner James Shapcott, of Draughton Road, Maidwell, took Bing in after visiting him at a dog home in Wales last year, having read about him on the home’s website.
Bing featured in the Mail in January this year after making such good progress thanks to his canine companion – the couple’s other dog, a Labrador called Darry.
And Ms Paul, a receptionist at a veterinary practice in Northampton, says Bing’s star has been rising ever since.
Award-winning appearances at dog shows as well as features in K9 magazine, Dogs Today, Pick Me Up and even Dutch dog magazine Hondenleven have followed, and Bing is now a familiar face around Maidwell.
“People often recognise Bing and they are straight over talking to him and cuddling him,” said Ms Paul.
“When they leave they say ‘bye Bing’. It’s funny they are not interested in me at all. He is the star and that’s how it should be.”
Earlier this year Dog In A Box, which produces the Animal Crackers programme for the Discovery Channel, contacted the couple about featuring him on the show.
“They said they’d read about him in K9 Magazine and thought he’d be perfect for Animal Crackers,” said Ms Paul
“They filmed Bing in the garden running around with Darry, the two of them lying in the kitchen together, Bing sitting and giving paws, Bing and Darry on a walk and my rosette wall with all the different framed articles.”
Ms Paul said she hopes Bing’s appearance on the show – due to be aired in winter or early spring – will make more people aware of the problems which can be caused when a blue ‘merle’ (a speckled colour combination in dogs’ coats) dog is bred with another blue merle.
It was breeding such as this which caused Bing’s problems.
She added: “Don’t get me wrong I love Bing but it is unfair to deliberately breed when you know the puppies could be born deaf and blind.”
Ms Paul has set up a blog to update people on Bing’s progress at www.bing2007.wetpaint.com.

Thank you Ian!!!!!

On 16th October I had a call from my mums friend saying that there was a stray border collie in her garden. Asking around, the locals said that the dog had been about for a few days and was nearly in a RTA the day before. A few people tried to catch the dog but were unsuccessful. I then spent about an hour with biscuits and a calm voice and finally she came over to me licked my hand and I was then able to put a lead on her.
The picture below is NOT her but looks very similar.
IF YOU HAVE LOST A COLLIE IN THE MOULTON AREA OF NORTHAMPTON PLEASE EMAIL ME bingaug2007@aol.com
The owner has 7 days to collect her (24th October) Then she we will put up for re homing.
She is VERY frightened and it seems as though she has been miss treated by men as she wont let men near her. She is not aggressive (from what Ive seen) but will need time to trust again.
CAN ANYONE PLEASE HELP.
IF YOU ARE INTERESTED PLEASE EMAIL ME AND I WILL GIVE YOU ALL THE REST OF THE DETAILS. THANKS

A had a lovely email from a wonderful lady who said she had read about Bing from an advert for the Bing Bazaar in a local shop window. Unfortunately she couldn't make the bazaar but offered to donate £40.00.
So on Sunday 19th of October she came over to meet Bing.
She also told me that she has a horse and where she keeps him, there was an empty field that was fenced all the way round and maybe perfect for Bing to have a good run around.
The following day she rang the lady who owned the field and told her about Bing.
Wednesday 22nd I went to meet the lady who looked after the grange and she kindly showed me the field.
After close inspection it does seem Bing proof. The owner very kindly said there would be no charge.
So all I need to do is text the owner to make sure it is ok to use and that's it. Home - Bing
From the Bing bazaar we sold £129.62 of stuff, received a £40.00 donation and have now got access to a large safe field. You cant ask for more than that.

A BIG BIG THANK YOU TO THE LADY (NOT SURE IF I CAN SAY ANY NAMES) FOR TELLING ME ABOUT THE FIELD AND A BIG BIG THANK YOU TO THE LADY FOR LETTING BING USE IT. I cant wait, Bing is going to love it!!!

31st October Halloween. Again no one came round and no one saw Bing and darry in their new costumes but never mind I can show you all on here.

And before you start thinking poor dogs firstly Darry will let me do anything and then if I say "doesn't he look lovely, isn't he handsome, he's such a good boy" etc he will parade around the room wagging his tail. And Bing loves it, anything he wears he suddenly feels all important and literally lifts his head a little higher when he walks.

Just to let you all know it is Darrys birthday on 6th November and he will be 4 years old. A big thank you to Darry for looking after Bing for just over 1 year.
If Bing could talk he would say thank you to Darry for being the best brother and teacher a dog could ever have.

Just thought id put all the videos togther of Bing and Darry

Today 4th October we took Bing for his first ever walk off lead.
When we arrived we walked into the field a little way and then un clipped him. At first he didn't understand he wasn't on a lead and he was only a little way away from us but after about 5 minutes he started to go a bit further and after about 10 minutes he was running all around the field.
When we had the sun behind us he could see us quite well and kept coming back to us every 30 seconds or so but when the sun was behind Bing he couldn't see us and I could tell as first he was worried. But after a while he understood the situation and used his nose to find us. Yes we were calling him and waving with the biggest arm movements but he just didn't see or hear us.

Altogether he had about a 20 minute run but he was shattered afterwards. His poor little back legs were very tired and he did nothing but sleep and walk around the house a little when he got back.
But the main thing is he loved it. He didn't get stressed and was responsive and even wagged his tail when he saw us.
Thank you soooooo much to the lady who told me about the field and to the other lady for letting Bing use it. He is one lucky little boy.

Bing can now walk up and down the stairs totally by himself. He just suddenly decided one day that was it. He sometimes needs a little help getting onto the first step because he finds the laminate floor too slippy but once hes on that's it.

It was my birthday 19th November and my sister came over. I hadn't seen her for a little while but she couldn't believe how well Bing looked. Its funny you don't notice it yourself. She said he looked healthier and generally better all round. "Thanks!!!"

Darry went to my new Vets for his yearly booster and this time he had a bordetella and parainfluenza vaccine as well.
(To me and you that's the kennel cough spray.) It now lasts a year and was cheaper because he had it all done at the same time.
Not all vets do it cheaper but it is worth asking. Like most vets will micro chip your dog cheaper when it is being neutered again worth asking.

Bing went for the first time to my new vets. There is no point giving Darry the kennel cough spray and not Bing.
On the 5th Dec my boyfriend and I took Bing. All the staff were very nice. They took a picture of Bing for their file, and when they got out the camera I though it would be an impossible task but the picture of Bing wasn't that bad.
He had a full check up from top to toe and he was a very good boy. This was the first time Bing had been to the vets since..... you know, and its strange although it was a totally different building, different vet etc I still felt odd. Almost light headed and I had to sit down. I didn't tell anyone I was feeling like this, they probably thought i was just lazy.
The vet wants to do a number of tests to see if/what sort of blood clotting problem Bing has. total cost around £150 I would do them tomorrow but what with Christmas and everything I don't have a spare £150 so I might have to do some more fund raising

Today the 17th Dec the oddest thing happened. I let them both out into the garden and as usual they both came back covered in mud. I shut them in the kitchen while I started to tidy the house. About 10mins later I was in my hall when I heard a funny sound. looking round for an intruder Darry walked over to me. Hang on a minute I shut them in the kitchen. Child's gate and the door was shut. I walked up to the door and sure enough it was open. The sound was something opening the door. Either we have ghosts in our house or Darry opened the door. If he did he must have pulled down on the handle until the door was open, put his paw through the child gate bars to push the door open and then jump the child gate. OK yes he can jump the gate so that's why I shut the door. And yes I did shut the door properly. Oh dear if he can open doors I am in trouble.

Bing will come in from outside in the garden every time now when it is dark. I turn off the patio lights and back on again and he comes straight in. If only my naughty Labrador was that good. ha ha
I will film him and put it on you tube.

Christmas 2008. Bing was very good, he didn't try to play with or bite any of the decoration, lights or the tree. He doesn't understand Christmas but accepts it anyway. Christmas day as you can see in the video above, Bing slept a lot. He still doesn't understand how to open presents but is very happy to help Darry eat them once they are opened. I never would have thought I could eat my Christmas meal with him in the same room. But he was brilliant and didn't even try and eat my food.

Also in the video above you'll notice Bing stamps to try and get Darrys attention. He does this all the time. He will either stamp or tap you with his paw when he wants you. He does this with Darry but I don't think Darry knows what he is doing it for.

Tuesday 6th Jan 09 there was a little snow on the floor. The last time it snowed Bing tried to eat it all and this time was no different.
He is not sure about it but loves to play in it.

Tuesday 13th Jan 09 Bing is going to his vets to have lots of tests done. Some include lung worm, bleeding time and blood pressure.
He has to be there at 8.50am and they will be keeping him in for the day. Once they have the results we will take things from there as whether he needs medication etc. To be honest I don't want to leave him and I feel very guilty as I know where he is going and he has no idea. But i know its for the best. When i have the results I will let you know.

Oh yes and Bing's 2nd birthday 31st Jan 09!!!!

Been having computer problems and so couldnt update the website sorry!!!

13th Jan my mum and I took Bing to the vets for 8.50am. I handed them his lead and they said they would call me later in the afternoon.
As soon as i walked out of the vets I felt sick. My mum took me to our local shopping centre but I just couldn't think of anything else. What if something went wrong or they couldn't stop his gum from bleeding. Stupid I know and i was even told by my best friend who is a vet (but unfortunately lives miles away) that the cut on the gum is very very small.
I waited until 12.30pm but i had to call them just to make sure. I was worried it would be too much for him and he could have a panic attack. They told me everything was fine but he didn't want any food not even with the chicken I brought for him.
Around 3.00pm they called to say I could collect Bing at 3.30pm.
The vet said Bing's blood pressure was in the normal range and his buccal mucosal time was also within the normal range (his gum stopped bleeding) The rest of the tests have been sent to a lab and they are awaiting the results.

I took Bing home and he was a little grumpy and very tired.
Darry was totally fine and didn't fuss over him at all like he normally does.

The following day Bing was back to normal but when ever I tried to look at his leg where it was shaved for the blood tests he just put his head on it so i couldn't see. Darry once had a reaction to either the clippers or the solution they wipe to clean the leg but Bing was totally fine and his fur is starting to grow back now.

17th Jan I had a call from the vets saying the rest of Bing's results were back and everything was ok.His faecal and blood sample were both normal. This is great news and I am very happy!!!!

Just to say a massive THANK YOU to Marian. This morning 29th Jan when I came downstairs i was surprised to see a parcel on my door mat.

It was a birthday card and two presents for Bing and even a little present for Darry.
Bing is not going to open them until his Birthday on Saturday 31st which I will film him doing and ill put on this website.
Thank you sooooooo much it was a lovely surprise. Words cant express how grateful I am.

Thank you to everyone who came to the Bing bazaar on the 7th March 2009 and a special thank you to: My mum and dad, James, James Dad, Liz, Emma and David who helped on the day and a big big thank you to Marian and Donna who donated items for the tombola, raffle and gave many items to sell.
